Battery Management of Mobile Devices

Hi there, I thought this might be a good time to write my first own blog post. Todays topic is one dear to me for many years now. I know, Android is open source and so on. But the truth is I currently am very far away from android system programming. I am talking about battery management of mobile devices.

TLDR; Please add the ability to any mobile device for controlling maximum charge when keeping it plugged in!

It has been known for a long time now, that batteries are best used between 20% and 80% of their capacity. Automotive manufacturers, who stand to gain the most from battery longevity as it seems, have proven that it is most certainly possible to give end users control over how far they want their batteries to charge on a daily basis.

For years now I’ve been setting timers for unplugging my mobile phone from charging for disconnecting when its battery reaches 80% capacity during charging. This, of course, I cannot do every time I charge. I would sometimes forget.

This was most frustrating for me using notebooks. Every time I would get a new notebook I’d spend considerable free time (in general a week or so) to figure out a way for manipulating charging cycles using software. Since most laptops offer very bad linux support I went with MacBooks two years ago, but that’s a story for another time. So I was very happy when I discovered something new this morning. An image describes it better, so I will just share with you a screenshot.

Now that is very much a step into the right direction. My MacBook stops charging because it knows I will never use the batteries full capacity, anyway! What a pleasant and long overdue surprise!

Now to the real meat: Dear Google, I wish this feature to appear in android, very soon, please!

I really notice my battery degrading every time I forget to unplug at 80%. That is very frustrating. You can not make money on new phones that way with me. I refuse to buy a new phone because its battery dies, no matter how hard you make it to replace them! I will always, always, always figure out a way to swap the battery. For mother earth I will!
